Typical Green Roof Assembly
A green roof assembly consists of components designed to support the horticulture as well as components to help perform the traditional functions on a roof – waterproofing and channeling excess water towards the drains. These layers are identified as:
- The Roof Deck with insulation and waterproofing
- Protection and moisture storage layer
- Drainage Layer
- Filter Layer
- Growing Media
- Green Roof Plants
These components work together as a system to perform all the functions of a green roof: waterproofing, drainage, water retention, evapotranspiration and supporting the growth of the plants. Proper design and specification of each component is critical to ensuring the system as a whole performs properly.
