Sedum kamtschaticum

Description

Sedum kamtschaticum is a staple plant for extensive green roofs. It reliably withstands a wide variety of conditions found on green roofs, and is one of the most drought-tolerant species ever tested. It grows into a dense cushion of fleshy foliage that appears mounded, adding some dimension to the roofscape. Large yellow flowers form a carpet in midsummer. Sedum kamtschaticum maintains its leaves at the beginning of the colder weather, turning pinkish to red before dropping its foliage in the coldest months. Dried flower stalks and stems remain through the winter, with new growth emerging in early spring. Green rosettes persist through the winter underneath the previous year’s growth. An excellent choice for planting on walls. This plant is tolerant of light shade but requires sun during the day. For a similar plant that holds its foliage longer in cold weather, see Phedimus takesimensis ‘Golden Carpet’.
