Penstemon pinifolius
Description
This species is an excellent choice for attracting hummingbirds. Native to the Southwestern US, this drought tolerant plant flowers from early summer until the first frost. Flowers are bright orange-red. Green, needle-shaped leaves grows in clumps and resembles the foliage of coniferous evergreens, and persists throughout most of the winter. Like most perennials used on green roofs, this plant will benefit from growing in a deeper soil profile or in mounded green roof media. It will need regular water to become established on the roof.
